Ying Zhang

With a background in science, Ying brings a practical problem-solving approach to her work as a designer. Hailing from Taiyuan, China, she grew up swimming in the Fenhe river and exploring local gardens, hills, and pavilions. Witness to perennial sandstorms originating thousands of miles away, Ying developed an interest in earth systems that eventually took her to Carleton College for a BA in Geology. For her thesis, she designed and built a rock garden to represent the Minnesota landscape, applying traditional garden-making principles from the text Sakuteiki. She earned an MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and gained broad professional experience at H+N+S Landscape in the Netherlands, Hocker Design Group in Dallas, and Turenscape in Beijing. She joined Reed Hilderbrand in 2022 and contributes to Massachusetts General Hospital Cambridge Street Expansion and two private hospitality ventures. Ying’s love for nature photography, hiking, surfing, and snowboarding draws her outdoors in her free time.
