The dynamic landscape of Laguna Gloria combines a rich cultural heritage shaped by unique geologic and hydrologic forces and amplified by diverse native ecologies to form the foundation for making and experiencing site-specific art.
The 2015 Master Plan for The Contemporary Austin Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria transforms the site into a work of art unto itself to activate the use of this historic landscape as an international arts center. It will become a platform for collaboration with artists and curators while also serving as a public space and destination.
The Moody Pavilions and Arrival Garden, the first phase of Reed Hilderbrand’s master plan for the twelve-acre historic Driscoll estate on Lake Austin, opened in 2019, establishing a new public face for the sculpture park focused on enhanced visitor experience and pedestrian arrival from West 35th Street. The landscape organizes the Moody Pavilions along a covered central walk, set within intimate garden spaces. Concrete site walls, decomposed granite paving, and lush plantings define two outdoor courts for patrons to gather in the shade beneath the majestic Live Oak canopy while enjoying views of the 100-year old Italianate villa and compelling works of the contemporary art.
