Among the key projects within the 2019 Buffalo Bayou East Master Plan, this dramatic former industrial site along Navigation Boulevard once saw the unloading of freight barges into immense warehouses. The buildings and the specialized gantry cranes used to unload the barges have long been abandoned. A unique recreational and cultural destination is now in design development, including a new park by Reed Hilderbrand and the Houston Public Library’s Hispanic History and Research Center.

Turkey Bend includes reclamation of the waterfront wharf with the construction of a community boating house. In addition to boating, future visitors will be invited to congregate and relax along the waterfront, which will host events and festivals of various scales. In Fall 2022, the Kinder Foundation awarded $100M to Buffalo Bayou Partnership to realize projects in the Buffalo Bayou East Master Plan. The adaptive re-use of the Turkey Bend warehouse, led by NADAAA, is now in construction.
